Romanian Embassy in Sofia Celebrates National Day with Online Concert in Ancient City

Sofia, December 1 (BTA) - On the occasion of Romania's national holiday, December 1, the Romanian Embassy in Sofia will treat its friends to an online concert of folk music, recorded in the historic city of Alba Iulia.

The Great Union Day marks the anniversary of unification of Transylvania and Romania and the establishment of a unified Romanian state. Alba Iulia was where the unification was proclaimed.

Through the social networks, the Embassy invites visitors to the concert starring the country's most famous folk singers.

The Great Union Day is traditionally celebrated with a military parade and various festivities for the public, but the pandemic has changed that.

On the occasion, the Romanian Embassy in Sofia opened its doors to a BTA photographer to help make a virtual tour for the Embassy friends in Bulgaria.

The embassy was built in 1985 and at the time it was one of the most modern buildings in Sofia. It keeps valuable items and art, including a woven tapestry with a historic theme, an Orthodox silver icon of the Virgin Mary and an oil portrait of renowned Romanian writer Mihai Eminescu.

Today, Mihai Eminescu is the name of a Sofia school which teaches Romanian language. Romanian is also taught in two universities in Bulgaria, the University of St. Kliment Ohridski in Sofia and the Ss Cyril and Methodius University in Veliko Turnovo

On display in the Embassy is a permanent exhibition with photos and documents, dedicated to the 140th anniversary of Bulgarian-Romanian relations.
