Justice Minister Demerdjiev: Bulgaria Sets Goal to Fully Digitalize Criminal Proceedings by 2026

December 6 (BTA) - Bulgarian caretaker Justice Minister Ivan Demerdjiev took part in the second Global Dialogue of Justice Leaders: Transforming justice for a vibrant social contract. Latvia's government hosted the event, cooperating with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Open Government Partnership and The Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies, the Justice Ministry said here on Monday.

Demerdjiev has stressed that Bulgaria sets the goal to fully digitalize all criminal proceedings by 2026. The aim is to secure maximum transparency, speed and efficiency at all stages of the proceedings. This will increase both judiciary's accountability and public trust in justice.

In the last two years, rule of law and judicial independence are facing the COVID-19 pandemic challenge which has led to the urgent need of digitalization in national justice systems. The rapid technological development should be combined with guarantees of respect for fundamental civil rights.
