Settlements in Southern Bulgaria Declare State of Emergency after Heavy Rainfall
Sofia, December 12 (BTA) - Heavy rainfall has forced settlements in some parts of Bulgaria to declare a state of emergency. The situation appeared worst in the southern municipality of Nedeleno and the wider Smolyan Region where rivers overflowed closing roads and activating landslides on Saturday and Sunday.
The rain intensity there was measured at around 200 l/sq m, according to the local authorities. Several trucks were trapped in a landslide on the Nedelino-Smolyan road.
Strong wind disrupted power supply to several villages in the region.
State of emergency was also declared in the municipality of Simitli in the southwest, where torrential rain flooded homes and caused damage to roads.
In Sofia, all emergency teams are put on alert and monitoring the Sofia rivers at critical spots.
