Counter-corruption Commission Launches Investigation Against Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev
January 31 (BTA) - The Counter-corruption and Unlawfully Acquired Assets Forfeiture Commission (CCUAA) launched an investigation against Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev following alerts about suspected violations of the law, CCUAA said here on Monday.
CCUAA has acted in response to comments made by Justice Minister Nadezhda Yordanova. She said she has received a number of alerts about Geshev allegedly having violated the law.
Legal news portal Lex.bg reported that Yordanova has specifically mentioned the alert of the Josi dairy company, in which one of its co-owners claims that he had transferred a share of the company to Geshev's father so he can have the Prosecutor General on his side while having a conflict with the other co-owner.
Another alert concerned a refusal by the Prosecution Magistracy to investigate commercial cases which have mysteriously disappeared from court.
Yordanova is waiting for the Constitutional Court to rule whether the Justice Minister is allowed to file a request before the Supreme Judicial Council for the Prosecutor General's resignation.
Prosecutor General's Spokesperson Siika Mileva told BTA that it is not in the Justice Minister's jurisdiction to revise applications and alerts concerning magistrates' violations. "The Minister must refer [the matter] to the competent authority, in this case CCUAA and the Specialized Prosecution Office, which she obviously has not done yet", Mileva added.
