Sleep Changes in Extreme Weather Studied during Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition
February 3 (BTA) - Sleep architectonics in extreme weather conditions is being studied at the St Kliment Ohridski Bulgarian Antarctic Base, Prof. Christo Pimpirev, Director of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute and leader of all Bulgarian Antarctic expeditions, said on Thursday.
The project is implemented by Dr Neyko Neykov and is led by Prof. Ivan Staykov of the Acibadem CityClinic Tokuda Hospital in Sofia.
Most participants in polar expeditions report significant sleep changes during their stay in Antractica. They experience strongly emotional memorable dreams. Sleep disorders are often triggered or get worse in Antarctica.
Polysomonography testing of the participants in the 30th Bulgarian Antarctic expedition began on the very day of their arrival at the base. Eight recordings have been carried out so far, revealing changes in Antarctic sleep. The study continues, Prof. Pimpirev explained.
