114 EDUCATION - MINISTER - INTERVIEW

Current School Year
Not to Be
Nullified

Sofia, March 26 (BTA) - The current school year will not be nullified despite the COVID-19 crisis, Education and Science Minister Krassimir Vulchev told Nova TV on Thursday. He said that remote online learning, which has become the norm for school-goers during the crisis, is very likely to continue at least until April 13.

Vulchev said: "It was a challenge for us to launch remote online learning and to offset the delays caused by the flu days. What happened was a pleasant surprise for us. Remote learning started effectively for a very large part of school students. Of course, there is still room for improvement."

The period of remote online learning induced by the COVID-19 crisis will be viewed on a par with conventional learning which involves physically going to school, and therefore the school year will not be nullified, he said. The days on which teachers work remotely will be officially regarded in the same way as the workdays spent in the physical classroom.

The minister declined to say whether matriculation exams will be cancelled. He said the situation with 12th-graders is most problematic, because many of them will seek admission to university. He noted: "We are sharing information with the education ministers of other countries. They are all cautious about making decisions, because this requires coordination with universities. I am sure that they will postpone the university admission campaign."

It is a problem that there are no computers in some Roma neighbourhoods. The students in these areas will receive extra schooling on weekends and during the summer. The Roma are also being visited by mediators who are bringing them learning material.

Currently, school students are not being graded for their performance. Teachers only take note of the degree of the students' engagement in the remote online learning process and the number of projects they have completed. This will reflect on their grades after physical school attendance is resumed. RY/VE
