Accessible Environment for Disabled People
Remains Big Problem, Informal Organization
Warns
Sofia, August 10 (BTA) - Accessible environment for people with disabilities remains a big problem, Ivan Yanev of an informal organization called Alliance Accessibility told a BTA-hosted news conference on Monday.
Yanev said that a new ordinance in support of disabled people has been put up for public consultation. He urged for amending the Spatial Development Act to introduce an accessibility assessment and mandatory requirements for accessibility of the urban environment.
Another example of difficult access is voting, Yanev said. Alliance Accessibility suggests including Braille writing in ballot printing, placing voting machines at accessible height and fitting them with sound equipment for sight-impaired people.
Dobroslav Iliev of an association for recreation and tourism suggested marking tourist routes for people using wheelchairs, and adapting mountain lifts for wheelchairs and baby prams.
Yet another problem are PE classes for children with disabilities who are directly excused from them due to be lack of suitable sports and equipment. RI/ZH//
