Sofia, October 12 (BTA) - Bulgaria posted a 54.4 million leva surplus in its trade with the rest of the EU in January - July 2020, according to estimates released by the National Statistical Institute on Monday.

Bulgarian exports to the EU in the seven-month period contracted by 6.5 per cent, year on year, and totalled 20,448.4 million leva. In July alone, exports declined 6.4 per cent from that month of 2019, amounting to 3,277.8 million leva.

Imports of goods from the EU to Bulgaria in January - July 2020 shrank by 12.5 per cent from the comparable period a year ago, reaching 20,394 million leva at CIF prices. In July alone, imports of goods from EU Member States to Bulgaria plunged 15.1 per cent from a year earlier and totalled 3,120.8 million leva.

Bulgarian Exports to Third Countries Shrink by 11.5%, Imports by 12.8%

In January - August 2020, Bulgarian exports to third countries contracted by 11.5 per cent from the like period of 2019, reaching 11,990.3 million leva. Imports from third countries dropped by 12.8 per cent to a total of 14,593.4 million leva.

Bulgaria's main trading partners in this group of countries were Turkey, China, the UK, the US, Serbia, Russia and North Macedonia, which accounted for 54.1 per cent of Bulgarian export to these markets.

In August alone, Bulgarian exports to third countries plummeted by 25.8 per cent from August 2019 to reach 1,323.8 million leva. August imports from third countries contracted by 9.6 per cent, year on year, to a total of 1,737.4 million leva.

Total Trade in Deficit

Bulgaria's total foreign trade was in a deficit of 2,565.5 million leva January - August 2020 and in a deficit of 430.4 million leva for August 2020.

Bulgarian export to the EU and third countries combined shrank by 8.4 per cent from the eight-month period of 2019 to reach a total of 35,230.5 million leva. During the same period, Bulgaria imported from the rest of the world goods worth 37,796 million leva (at CIF prices), which was 12.6 per cent less than in January-August 2019. In August alone, exports from all markets stood at 4,115.6 million leva, down by 15.1 per cent from this time last year, and imports contracted by 10.5 per cent from August 2019, to reach 4,546 million leva.
