Ponto-Sarmatic Steppesat Cape Kaliakra To Be Restored
October 27 (BTA) - The Kavarna Municipality in northeastern Bulgaria started work on the restoration of the Ponto-Sarmatic steppes, the Bulgarian National Radio announced on Tuesday. The project is funded by the Enterprise for Management of Environment Protection Activities, following a decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), imposing serious financial sanctions on Bulgaria for failing to protect the migratory bird habitat. The Kavarna Municipality is the first to carry out an experimental project for the restoration of the habitat. Its implementation is part of the measures proposed by Bulgaria as a key factor determining the successful and full implementation of a CJEU decision of 2016 on the project Kaliakra Wind Power.
The vegetation typical for the region is already being planted on two designated locations. The project was launched in 2019 with a 36-month completion period, and is worth 195,000 leva. Its aim is to prove before the CJEU that Bulgaria complies with and enacts European legislation.
