Theatre Announced
at Sofia Gala


Sofia, May 24 (BTA) - The annual Askeer awards for Bulgarian theatre were announced at a gala held in Sofia's Theatre of the Bulgarian Army in the evening ahead of May 24, the Day of Bulgarian Letters, Education and Culture. Three Askeers went to Trash, a play of Theatre 199 in Sofia, and three to Orange Peel staged at Vazrazhdane Theatre, also in Sofia.

Anastasia Lyutova grabbed the Best Actress Askeer with her role in Trash by Elena Telbis, directed by Ivaylo Hristov. The same play also took the statuettes for Best Peformance and Contemporary Bulgarian Play.

Svetlana Yancheva won for Best Actress in a Supporting Role with Shakespirin during a Pandemic (based on Shakespeare) in Sofia's Maluk Gradski Teatur zad Kanala.

Hristo Moutafchiev won for Best Actor in Angel's Cry by Stefan Tsanev (directed by Stoyan Radev at the Ivan Vazov National Theatre). Stoyan Radev took the award for Best Directing for the same play and for Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf in Maluk Gradski Teatur.

Jordan Russin took the Askeer Best Actor in Supporting Role with Orange Peel.

Bulgarian Oscar nominee Maria Bakalova announced, by video message, the winner in the Rising Star category: Vittoria Nikolova with The Night of the Iguana in Vuzrazhdane Theatre (directed by Vessela Vassileva). The award for Best Stage Decoration also went to that theatre for Orange Peel by Maja Pelevic.

Svila Velichkova and Vanina Tsandeva won the Askeer for Best Costumes with the Homecoming by Harold Pinter (Maluk Gradski Teatur zad Kanala) and New Land (Ivan Vazov National Theatre).

Teodosii Spassov won the Askeer for Music with several plays staged in Azaryan Theatre in Sofia.

As expected, playright Stefan Tsanev, director Krassimir Spassov and actor Stefan Mavrodiev won Askeers for lifetime achievement.

For the first time in the 30-year history of the Askeers, there was a symphony orchestra on stage during the gala.
