Bulgaria at the Olympics:
Karateka Ivet Goranova Wins Gold Medal
in Kumite at 55 kg

Tokyo, August 5 (BTA special correspondent Dimiter Velyov) - Bulgarian karateka Ivet Goranova won the Olympic title in kumite at 55 kg on Thursday, prevailing over Anzhelika Terliuga of Ukraine in the final by 5-1 points. This is the first Olympic gold for Bulgaria in thirteen years, after Rumyana Neykova's title in rowing at the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

Goranova, the gold medallist of the 2019 European Games in Minsk, began her participation in the Tokyo Olympics with a victory over Taiwan Tzuyun Wen by 5-2 points. Later, the 21-year-old Bulgarian (a first-time Olympian) won against Turkey's Serap Ozcelik Arapoglu by 5-1 points, against Iran's Sara Bahmanyar by 5-2 points and against Austria's Bettina Plank by 4-3 points.

Goranova's gold medal was the fourth distinction for Bulgaria at these Olympic Games. Later, wrestler Evelina Nikolova won a fifth medal for the country. RY/RI/MT/VE
