Forty-three Transplants Performed in Bulgaria since Beginning of 2021

October 4 (BTA) - Since the beginning of the year, 43
transplants have been performed in Bulgaria. A total of 14 of
them
were from a living donor and 29 from a cadaveric donor, the
press service of the Health Ministry said on Monday. For the
same
period there were 11 donors, after established brain death,
while for the whole of 2020 they were only four, the press
service said.

     There are 1,010 Bulgarians waiting for an organ transplant,
 with 893 waiting for a kidney transplant, 41 for a liver, 44
for a heart, and 22 for a lung.

    According to the Council of Europe, in 2020, 35,529 organ
transplants were performed in Europe, which is 20 percent less
than the transplants performed in 2019. In just one year, 43,183
 citizens got on the waiting list for transplants. In Europe
last year, an average of 21 patients died each day waiting for a
 transplant.

   October 9 marks the European Day of Organ Donation and
Transplantation. Thematic initiatives are planned for October
