Stranded Bulk Carrier's Shipmaster, Second Assistant Shipmaster Remanded in Custody

October 19 (BTA) - The Varna Appellate
Court (VAC) has left in custody the shipmaster and second
assistant shipmaster of the stranded bulk carrier "Vera Su", the
Court said in a press release on Tuesday. The decision is
unappealable.

The 32-years-old Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier "Vera Su",
owned by a Turkish company, veered off course and ran aground
near the Kamen Bryag locality on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast
on  the night of September 20. The ship carries 3,000 tonnes of
urea. All seamen of the 9-strong crew were evacuated on October
6 at the shipmaster's request and questioned at the district
court in Dobrich on October 7. The shipmaster and second
assistant shipmaster were subsequently detained.

Haydar E. [name might be misspelled] and Kemal A. are in custody
for allowing "Vera Su" to run aground, thus endangering the
lives of other people and the integrity of another's property,
the VAC said.
