December 7 (BTA) - As of this year, the Institute of
Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research with the Bulgarian Academy
of Sciences (IBER-BAS) has been entrusted with a project related
 to remote multiparameter monitoring of representative elements
of biological diversity on Livingston Island, Antarctica, by the
 National Centre for Polar Studies with Sofia University St.
Kliment Ohridski. This was announced by the Bulgarian
Ornithological Centre at IBER-BAS.   

The main objective is to assess the anthropogenic impact of
unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) on colonies of nesting species
 of penguins and plant communities on Livingston Island, to
systematically collect and analyse initial data as a basis for
their long-term monitoring.   

The ornithological centre cited information from the Bulgarian
Antarctic Institute that the first group of 15 polar explorers
on the jubilee 30th Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition sailed to
Antarctica on Saturday, on a Chilean warship, after a ten-day
quarantine in the port of Punta Arenas.
